Chicken Breed Focus - Marans

Here's my Odin. He's a really good rooster. He's pretty easy to deal with when he gets feisty. He's not the suavest boy, though. He's more like Will Farrell in the Roxbury skits 🤣. I got him from a shelter last summer. He is missing half of the outer toe on the left leg and the outer on the right is pretty stunted - I think it's a birth defect. He's kinda clumsy because of that, and he can't fly very well. He's around 9 pounds, and he's nearly a year old now.

That is a pinless peeper, used to dissuade bullying.
I have some bullying going on right now. Have the pinless peepers helped? How long do you leave them on? Also what is the breed behind your Maran? I have the same one but she was a random surprise in our batch of chicks and I cannot figure out what she is. She is the one that has a little Mohawk/ tuff of feather on her head.

The shortened outer toes are actually pretty common in Marans. Not that it's super great, but definitely a common occurrence.

I have two Cuckoo Marans in my layer flock which at least one or maybe both have started laying. Three eggs on the right are the Marans, two left are from my Welsummer. These girls will eventually have a Cuckoo Marans rooster

I also have a younger trio of Marans, blue copper cockerel and pullet plus a splash copper pullet. They are fast and always at my feet so hard to get a photo lol cockerel isnt the best but hes all I have for now

I got Marans firstly for pets as I love the look of the Cuckoos, eggs second and to eventually breed more pet Marans and Olive eggers. One day I want to have a small flock of Marans that fit the SOP, but I have lots to learn

I put them on my RSL girls because they were ruthless, and it was like a miracle occurred. Sadly, though, for my flock they are a permanent item because during the trial period that I took them off, the two RSL's were into overdrive violent....like making up for lost time.

I bought a hatching egg mix that contain 3 Marans eggs and two Breda covered by Marans eggs. I fell in love with those dark chocolate eggs and knew I had to have them in my life. Since I know absolutely nothing about genetics, what will the Marans-Breda cross produce? Curious about both chicken appearance and future egg color (assuming at least one is a pullet).
