I'm hoping to be able to have backyard chickens soon, and I'm going to raise them from chicks. I want one each of Rhode Island Red, Barred Plymouth Rock, Blue Silkie Bantam, Gold Spangled Hamburg, and Australorp. Have any of you had these breeds? What do you recommend? I know the bantam won't produce many eggs, but other than that are the others good producers? Thanks!

Hello Millie, chickens are so much fun! I live in lower Michigan, so need good winter layers also. Silkies are unable to fly and less heat and cold tolerant; I wasn't aware of their issues, so mine didn't do well. My fault! The others are nice dual purpose birds generally, but quality will vary a lot depending on where they come from. In general, birds from comercial hatcheries may be less close to the breed standard than is ideal. It's fun to try several different breeds, the pick personal favorites. Enjoy! Mary

Thanks for the info! It gets hot in the summer here, so thanks for the advice on silkies. Maybe there's a way to help them keep cool. I really appreciate any help as a newbie, so thanks again.
