Hello guys, I have some chicks in my incubator about 11 days in. I am looking for a brooder, and thought I could use a cardboard box with a heat lamp? If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on this and what heat lamp to get that would be great!
Thanks

For a brooder I use a long plastic tote box, it works great. For heat lamp we just got red heat lamp bulbs along with the lamp itself at our local farm store Atwoods, I do not know what brand it was though

Sounds great, I’ll buy a few red heat lamp bulbs and see how they go. Thanks

How many chicks?

I'm a fan of brooding outdoors in the coop if possible. Where, in general, are you located? Climate matters. :)

If you go with a heat lamp be sure to buy the bulb at the farm store because some bulbs not intended for use with animals are coated with teflon, which is deadly to birds. Alternately, buy bulbs at the pet store in the reptile section.

Thanks for that! There will be a maximum of 9 chicks. I’m located in Australia and temperatures are about 30-40 degrees Celsius at the moment, so thinking of keeping them inside.

My outdoor brooder would be overkill for 9, but this is what I did: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/run-to-outdoor-brooder-conversion.76634/

Since I live in the Steamy Southeast of the US I understand the challenge of keeping chickens cool enough. My early summer chicks spent much of their time with the heat lamp off completely.

You should probably ask in the Australia thread for targeted advice for your specific conditions: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...es-and-that-funny-little-island.598568/unread
