Hello. I noticed this morning that one of my hens had a bubbly eye. She is showing no other symptoms except a slightly poopy butt. I have quarantined her. I have checked the rest of my flock as much as possible (they free range during the day) and see no other signs. No one has discharge or sneezing, etc.... This is a hen I had wanted to breed. Should I just wait to see if it is environmental or try to treat? Thanks.

You certainly may treat the eye, even not knowing for sure what is causing the irritation. You will need ordinary saline solution and Vetericyn Ophthalmic Gel.

I have an eleven year old hen who gets bubbly eye occasionally from pressure from a tumor over her eye. Treating her first by flushing her eyes, then putting the Vetericyn eye gel in her eyes clears up the bubbles right away and is good for weeks before she needs treatment again.

If this treatment fails to clear up your hen's bubbly eye, then she may have a respiratory infection or a sinus infection that might require an antibiotic ophthalmic ointment or even an oral antibiotic if you see her getting worse instead of better.

A bubbly eye can be a sign of mycoplasma, a respiratory disease. Usually there is either coughing or sneezing, or rattly breathing and a clear nasal discharge. Terramycin eye ointment applied twice daily is good just for the eye, but if other symptoms occur, I would get some Tylan 50 injectable antibiotic plus syringes from your feed store. It can be given orally without the needle. It is also used in cattle, so you will find it in the cattle meds.
