Chicken can't stand up

Because he was healthy prior to attack,it is possible he has some type of leg/hip injury which may be a result of attack or he may have injured himself while being confined. First keep him inside home in some type of cage, use towels on floor of cage to help with traction, make sure he has close/easy access to food/water,meaning that he does not have to walk to reach feed/water containers.Do not place any roosts in cage, you may have to roll a towel up into a donut shape and place him in center to take body weight off leg/hip or even t-shirts used as slings can help with this. Provide him with additional heat b/c when birds are ill/injured they cannot regulate their body temp and are susceptible to hypothermia. I would give him vitamins(polyvisol infant drops without iron,2 drops a day on side of beak so they roll into mouth) Try adding warm water to feed so it resembles oatmeal or warm oatmeal with a little honey, pablum can also be used or baby food(meat, veggies)anything to encourage eating. If he does not eat you may want to look into tube feeding, which is very easy to do after you get past your initial fear of trying it.

I want you to pick him up and run thumbs/hands down back of legs(from where leg joins body to where scales start)press down while doing,if it is a slipped tendon issue, tendon will feel loose/springy,almost like an elastic band, press down you should feel it snap back into place(compare to another bird so you know how it should feel). Now run hands down front of leg, feel any swelling or can you see any bruising? When you press high on thigh does he react in pain or pull leg away? When you hold him up will he pull up legs or move legs, when you touch bottom of feet does he react?

If you feel he is in pain you can give him aspirin, either low dose 81mg or reg 325mg aspirin, dose is 25mg per lb of body weight add a bit of water and make into a slurry(try adding a pinch of sugar b/c aspirin is bitter tasting)and give to drink or carefully syringe some into mouth if he will not drink, aspirin can also be wrapped in a piece of meat or cheese and given orally or add 1 325mg aspirin to 1 gallon of water.

Last,is a vet a possibility?

He doesn't seem to be in pain when I picked him up he just let both of his legs hang he's really weak but he still eats and drinks without being force no vet none of the vets around here see chickens when I got to the bend in his leg he pulled away like it hurt when I touched it thank you for your help the towel idea works good for. Him but he still tips the water over and ends up laying in it so ive been trying to make sure he gets enought each day before I go to school and once I get home he also ends up laying in his food but I've found giving him watermelon with it help keep Hume interested so he's eating

My RIR hen (2 years) can't stand up, and I do know why. My chihuahua has been harassing the hens, and I heard a ruckus and found her lying on the ground with her wings out to support her. I turned her upside down and pulled on her legs gently, and she shuddered with pain when her hip was moved. When I put her down, she hopped a little on one leg before collapsing. My inclination is to just let her rest for a day, but is there a danger if she doesn't eat or drink for 24 hours? I put food and water in front of her, but she doesn't seem interested.

(There is no weather or illness issue here.)

Thanks.

Welcome to BYC! Can you take her to a vet?

Thank you!

She's hopping around on one leg today and eating, although she lies down after a few hops, and balancing gives her trouble in targeting bugs.

I'll see if there's a livestock vet around. I don't want to go to someone who will just tell me to euthanize her.

No luck in finding a vet, Pinellas county FL. The ones recommended on the livestock vet website do NOT handle chickens. Not even the vet tech I know who has chickens has a vet who handles chickens. I'm sure there must be someone out by the fairgrounds who does though - only 45 minutes away!

Found one! BluePearl - only $128 for the visit. I think I should buy a new flock for that much!

I made a vet appointment and then canceled it when I noticed that my little chicken is using both legs to walk. She's still got quite a limp, but her legs are not cockeyed in any way and she has muscular control over her whole leg and toes. Is there any need for me to worry at this point? I don't want her to be permanently damaged, but not sure if I can justify the expense, especially if she's healing on her own.

Thanks.

(Hint: Apparently I should have been looking for bird hospital, not livestock vet. There are a handful of bird vets around.)
