I have a 3 year old hen that had mites about 2-3 weeks ago so we put sevin dust on her head and in her coop most of the mites went away but I noticed 2 days ago she seemed a little off- the dust got kind of cakey so i washed it off picked as many of the mites as i could off and after she dried put so more dust on. the next day her skin around her eyes and cheek area seems a bit swollen and she is lethargic but still moving around and eating and drinking but not as quick as she normally does. then today i noticed she had like a mass of poop stuck to her so i cleaned that all off but she still seems lethargic to me..She has only laid like 3 eggs her whole life and that was about 2 years ago. We do give her about 15 meal worms a day and she eats scratch. her face is still puffy she is lethargic and i haven't seen her poop. not sure if she is egg bound or what? please help? Thanks!

Do you feed her a layer feed? Have you wormed her lately? Sounds like the mites have weakened her. She needs some vitamins and electrolytes to give her a boost. She also needs to be fed something other than scratch. Scratch holds no nutritional value. I would also discontinue the mealworms. Treats like that are like candy. Check her again for mites and be sure she has none left. While you are doing all of this, I would watch for more symptoms like sneezing or nasal discharge. This means that she has a respiratory infection. You will need to treat her with an antibiotic. You can get this at a feed store in a powder form. It goes into her water. If she does not improve then there is another issue. These are just simple things you can do immediately.

What is her regular feed? Was the coop cleaned out after discovery of mites? I'd quit the sevin immediately and place in a cage with mite free bedding. Try small amount of Adams tick and flea spray (spray on gloved hands and transfer to chicken with the gloves) or try Eprinex Cattle pour-on .5cc on skin of upper back, between wings. Could be too much sevin (just a guess).

No layer just scratch. so can i give her gatorade for electrolytes like horses? Should I mix layer with the scratch? the mites are gone and no discharge so should i still get her antibiotics?

Okay tommorow I will pick up the antibiotics and layer, throughly clean the coop and maybe some gatorade in her water? and the sevin was stopped two days ago. any other suggestions?

There is really no reason to give chickens scratch. It should be used as a treat. During cold winter months some use it to feed right before roosting to boost their body heat, but that is all.

I agree with removing the sevin first. It may have irritated her eyes, nose, etc.
