Chicken ~ Compost bin

i started a compost bin in a large plastic trash can that hubby drilled small holes in all around. but i'm already starting to dislike it. it's SUPER heavy and not easy to roll to mix up all the stuff. so i was wondering if anyone has a compost pile just laying on the ground with no enclosure? cuz that's what i'm thinking of doing.

Chkinut, you can put your compost in a heap on the ground with no container. It won't heat up as quickly and therefore might take longer to break down, but it will still work. Containers keep the pile stacked on top of itself which just allows for the good stuff (bacteria and microbes) to be cozy. But doing what you describe will work just fine.
