We had a horrible storm yesterday and I believe lightening hit my coop. I came home from work to find a smoldering pile of ashes. My flock consisted of 6 adult white leghorns and 4 barred rock chicks. I had just put my babies in the coop the night before, I was able to find the 6 adults, but only one chick. I guess they waited in their fenced in run until the coop collapsed to get away from the fire.
My heart is aching thinking about the chicks suffering; and to add to my heavy heart, I went out to check on everyone this morning, and two of leghorns combs has burns on them. Is there anything I can give them so they are not in pain?

To my insensitive coworkers....they were not just chickens! They were my pets that I loved very much!

So sorry to hear this, you just never know what new thing can happen to our chickens.

Will there be an investigation? It looks like there are plenty of more conductive things for lightning to hit (trees).

For the burn I'd look up safe burn creams any burn cream that isn't marked 'call poison control if ingested'

Maybe some baby aspirin in the water, a pain reliever of some kind might help?
I am so sorry for your loss, that is just horrible :(

Oh hell, I'm so sorry! That is so sad

Unfortunately I can't advice you on treatment for your remaining chickens, but I'm sure someone here can and will. Just wanted to give you a big

. My chickens are also way more than "just chickens" and I love them to bits too. It's horrible losing them. I know how you feel.

This is a terrible disaster! Sorry for your losses. I recommend that you go to a pharmacy and see if you can buy an ointment for burns. Preferably a combination burn/antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. If you have aloe vera plants, break a leaf off and apply the juice from the leaf directly onto the burns, it will temporarily relieve pain.

How awful!! I am so sorry! Be sure if you buy burn cream that there's no "caine" in it. Aspirin dissolved in water will help pain. SHAME on your co-workers. I'm just very thankful most were able to avoid the fire. Hugs to you!

That is tragic! I am sorry for your loss :(

I am new to chickens so no help for the treatment of the burns, but I absolutely wish you the best moving forward...

Well, we are on the road to recovery. I was unable to locate our 3 chicks but, everyone else seems to be adjusting.

Temporarily their home consist of a 12x12 fenced lot with a top. I think they are still confused because in the evening, instead of going inside the fence to roost, they roost on top. Every evening, I have to pick them up and put them inside. Once we get their new home rebuilt, I hope they will remember that they need to go INSIDE!

Thanks for all the kind words!
