I found my black sex link dead in the nesting box.
She's 2 years old, eating egg layer feed, some scratch as-well-as some fruits and veggies.
Neck wasnt broken, no blood anywhere (not even on the egg).
I'm confused.
Any idea what happened?

Welcome to BYC. Do you still have her body? It can be refrigerated in a plastic bag, and sent or taken to the state vet or poultry lab for a necropsy to find a cause of death. Had she been spending a long time in the nest box? Was the egg hers? Had she lost weight in her breast bone area lately? Heat in summer can really be tough on some hens. Check her crop for signs of impaction or sour crop. I'm sorry that you lost her.

Thank you for your reply. We had already disposed of her but her crop seemed full. I've only had my chickens since June of last year (I'm a newbie). I researched care of chickens but everything I read never touched on sour crop or crop impaction; I only learned of it today. Thank you for the information and quick response.
I wonder if the tomatoes are too fibrous for my chickens or maybe she ingested some grass. I wish we would of saved her body to find out. Thank you!
