We just came home and found our 2 year old lavender orpington face down in the pine shavings, dead. We didn't notice anything off with her when we were in the coop yesterday. When I picked her up, her vent area was very bloody though I did not actually check her vent well, I just saw the blood, figured I would research what happened and we quickly buried her as it was already getting dark and there is a blizzard going on so I rushed to get her buried before we didnt have the chance to. I searched around posts on the site but didnt come across any other ones where the same thing happened so now I wish I checked her out more. This was our first batch of chickens, so we are somewhat new to this. We just got 7 chicks last week but they are in the house and they haven't been introduced to each other. The chicks all still look very healthy. Other things that are mentionable, we had 1 egg yesterday that had a significant amount of blood on it, though it was blue and I'm pretty positive the one who died laid brown eggs. We also had another chicken pass away about 3 months ago due to being egg bound during molting. I want to make sure this was an internal issue not something that our 3 remaining hens might catch. They all looked fine when I was in the coop, they didnt even seem to care the other one was just dead on the floor. 😳 I also want to be sure I didn't cause this by not supporting them enough during the molt as I feel like it's strange to have lost 2 so recently due to what I assume is a related issue. Thanks for any help, it's fun having chickens until something happens then its pretty rough learning about all the things that can go wrong!

Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry to hear about your hen.

Without investigating further, it would be hard to know what happened.
Since you did notice a bloody vent she may have been prolapsed and the other hens picked at it, possibly she was egg bound or she was attacked by something (a predator). These are just guesses.

There's so many things that can affect hens. Provide them with a nutritionally balanced poultry feed, fresh clean water daily, oyster shell and grit free choice.

Thanks for your response. I went out and checked the coop this morning, it was definitely not a predator as they are completely enclosed and nothing was damaged, none of the hens had any blood on them and I feel like I saw enough to where I would have noticed a prolapsed vent so I also don't think that was likely it either. There were a couple small blood splatters, maybe 5 mini drops total on the wall in 2 different places but no bloody droppings or puddle anywhere. Do you know if it is common for them to have an issue while laying that would cause this? I didn't even know it was possible. I feed them Scratch & Peck organic feed and they have grit, oyster shells and fresh water available to them all the time. Is there anything else recommended to give during molting supplement wise? I gave them a bit of extra black soldier fly worms during that time for more protein, just not sure if that was enough? Thanks again for any help!
