I've dealt with attacks before, but the unknown of a disappearance is hard to deal with.
After 10 days of barely sleeping, I lied down after work to half-sleep a couple of hours before the chicks usually go to bed. I woke up to some light chatter from the chickens, who were all huddled together but not really hiding and not really yelling. A two-month-old deer who's been living with her mom a few hundred feet from my house was trotting around the chicks. She's never gotten that close to my house before so I suspect there was an animal out there that scared her enough to come over.
I've had possums around but figure there would be feathers left behind if that's the culprit. Another chick survived a fox attack a while back and there were tons of feathers everywhere. I searched everywhere for a few hours within the fully-fenced acre that they roam, and even outside. I guess I just have to wait and see since their eyes don't reflect from a flashlight.
She was old and sick (ascites?), but she's had some decent days lately
