Chicken eggs too big?

My delight at finding my first, very small, chicken egg was shattered when a co-worker told me that her chickens sometimes lay great big eggs and that this kills them. Is this true? How can it be avoided? Are some breeds more prone to this than others? Really don't want to lose any of my girls. Thanks.

My Sebrite bantams normally lay eggs an inch tall. but somtimes they will lay eggs half that size or bigger.
