I received this email this afternoon (I don't know how to post the pics yet, though)

Hi Cheryl,


This is one of our young roosters (I think he's a rooster) and he is acting very strangely. He limps on one leg, and the feet are folded down on the that side. He has these strange bumps on his cockscomb that look like a fungus or something??? He just sits. His eyes look ok. Not sure what's going on. Have you ever heard of this?

When she says legs folded down, she means they are hanging limp and straight.

Any wisdom for her?

Can you post the pic please? This is just too little info.

Ask her please when it started. Is there a chance he's fallen and injured himself? Is he picked on?

I wouln't expect a fungal infectioin on a comb, as it tends to dry easily. Please post the pic, and I'll see what I know that maybe of value to her.

I will ask her if he got vaccinated for Mareks. and mentioned "Fowl Pox, too. To the vet!

If you think its heat prostration, you must immediatly give him water, and if possible someting like gatoraide. He must have electrolytes at once. You may have to give 1-2ccs at a time via (no needle) syringe if he's too weak.

I'd think about bathing him in 80 degree water. Not cold enought to shock him, but cool enough to cool him. Give him a 1 minute rinse or soak, then wrap in a towel.

Here is more from the roo's 'mom':

We brought the rooster up to the house and are keeping him on our front porch. From the info I have found online, and from a farm friend who runs the Feed Bucket we get our feed from, it may just be that he is overheated. It has been very hot. The other chickens are doing fine, but maybe he is just weaker and he is only about 4 months old. One of his feet just folds under him, and there doesn't seem to be any injuries. With coccidiosis, wouldn't there be other symptoms? His poop looks normal (white and green, dry, not foamy or bloody). When we put his water in the cage with him, he looked at it but wouldn't drink...so we are giving him water by a dropper which he drinks right down.

(I had instructed her about dropper-feeding, ie, not to force it down but let it drip onto the beak.)

We are both going to research Marek's and Fowl Pox.

What do you all think from the pics?

I PMd you. Give her the "receipe" for electolyte soup. I'd offer 2 full dropperfulls of it now, and every half hour next few hours. Maybe at night if someones up.

I'm wondering if that isn't just his kind of comb developing??? He's 4 mos.
