Chicken Empathy

I watch her a lot with them because I want to be sure I’m not making assumptions based on my emotions about what I’m observing.
It’s clear that she chooses to come over to them each time.
The others will approach but quickly move on to other things.
Cricket really seems to prefer to be around them.
It’s amazing that your little Nankin would help such young chicks when she was pretty young too.
I do think Cricket will be a good mother.
I’m excited to see it one day.

Nannies are naturally inclined to be broody, or so I'm told. I just wish someone would explain that to Miss Piggy. my older hen. She's a great layer, but a real stinker to babies ... ANY babies! I guess they're more like people than we realize. Some, like Evie and your Cricket, are born mothers. Others, like Piggy, are better off letting others do the rearing. It takes all kinds, right? ... even in the chicken world!

What fabulous rooster! Long live king Zachary!
Haha that's what I say! I tried breeding him early this spring, but the chick was malpositioned and is half the size of its other hatchmates. I got different Lavender hens and will try again next year in hopes of some more good roosters to pass on good genes. He's got quite the dramatic story behind him, he was one of three brothers. He was the smallest brother. At a year old they were always switching off who was the big king. The middle brother stayed out too late and was swiftly beheaded by an owl, the oldest brother had a heart attack from I assume growing so large so fast. King Zachary stepped up and took on the role of King like a champ, he ruled 30 hens better than I could have ever hoped.

I'm blessed also with a fabulous Buff Orpington cockerel now six months old named Isaiah. Picture included.

Thank you! I'm rather taken with him also. He's my second Orpington, also larger at this time than my last years model. I believe he will be a large one when he's finished growing.
I'm a huge Orphington fan. I had a buff blue that was showing real promise, but the poor guy didn't respond to the amprolium fast enough and passed away. Right now I've got some Splash Orphingtons that are looking really nice so far, hens and cockerels are a decent size right now at 6 months. I love splash colors

Sorry for your loss!
