Chicken eye infection

We found Veronica, a Plymouth Rock we things sitting on her perch not moving this morning and with this nasty eye infection. Any ideas? Treatments?

1. Plymouth Rock, 2-3 years she’s a bigger chook not sure of weight

3. Maybe just overnight
4. No sign of trauma
5. Could it have anything to do with the water dragons, magpies and crows that also live in out yard?
6. They drink Water & combination or pellets, seeds, grains from dinechook containers and scraps from our kitchen
7. Couldn’t see any unusual poos
8. We will do a saline eye bath when the water cools
9. We’d ideally like to treat ourself as it’s cheaper. We have time and energy to dedicate to this. But if we have to get something from a bird vet that’s easy and local.

11. Sugar cane mulch for bedding with a metal coop. They are pretty free range out of the coop. We live in a leafy city suburb.

Was her eye pecked? I am seeing a closed eyelid with a scabby area on the outside. Does she ope the eye? Can you open it and see if there are any bubbles or foam, gunk, or if the eye looks normal? Saline or eye wash can be used to flush the eye twice a day. If you have any antibiotic eye drops or ointment, or could get some from a vet that might be good. Have you heard her sneeze or have noisy breathing?

Is she low in pecking order? Can you bring her down and offer some dry and wet chicken feed, and a bit of egg? Water with electrolytes or a but of sugar might be good to offer. While her eye is closed, she may be having trouble seeing water, so she could be dehydrated. Concentrate on getting her hydrated then fed. Does she lay eggs? Has she lost any weight?

It’s been a heat wave here. They have plenty of shade and water but we are all struggling.
We will check out the eye when we clean it. Just setting up a space for her. She is drinking water now we got her off the perch. She is the highest on the pecking order. She hasn’t lost any weight as far we can tell. Can’t hear any issue with breathing.

We couldn’t open the eye really. But this is a photo of as much as we got to see. I can’t figure out how to upload the photo.

We cleaned out white mucus from the left eye and there was a section that was stuck but it got pinched off with fingers. I’ll go get the drops from the vet now.

The vet won’t give anything unless they see the Veronica. Do you know if we can use human eye oitment?
