Chicken feed ratio per bird

That’s a good idea. Lol, with my luck the goats would get stuck or chew through it.:) I was thinking of making a sort of doggie door, but only big enough for the chickens, and leaving it open all day, then locking it at night. The chicken coop is an old boat stall frame with a heavy tarp on top, and closed up with wood .

Here's what I feed my chickens in. My fat little dog is losing weight because she can no longer steal their feed. It has four

3" PVC 90°ells inside. The bottoms of the ells are two inches above the bottom of the bucket. This one is really ugly. Search "no waste feeders" here on BYC and you will see some lovely ones made by people who can actually control their power tools, lol.

Hmmm. The video with the vertical wire is giving me ideas! I briefly tried (half-a$$ed) a trough feeder for the fermented feed to keep the hens from scratching out the little bit of grain/seeds I add as well as them just flinging the food around off the feed pan. They do tend to go back and clean it up later but still...

I told my DH I wanted to circle back to a trough feeder just the other day so this post is very timely!

I am using just a 2 foot wooden trough I built and feeding them in that. It’s really heavy so they can’t knock it over but they can stand in it and leave me little presents, lol

A quarter pound per bird for medium sized birds like Rhode Island Reds. Don't count roosters, they eat very little. If you are feeding more than that you are feeding wild birds, rats, or other vermin. Keep it available at all times or your egg/meat production will suffer in a good metal treadle feeder with a spring loaded door. If you haven't bought one yet you are already paying for it. Check the negative reviews before purchasing.

Have you had this happen to you? You mention the same issues on another thread of mine.

My fermented feed goes right into the bellies (crops) of my hens. I don’t have any rodent problems right now. Thankfully! My dry feed feeder pvc pipes have caps that I can put on at night if needed. I’ll cross that bridge if and when I get to it.
