Chicken Feed Recipes, Articles and Systems

Awesome thank you!!! I have my to do list now heh

Do note that all these Suet-like treats are HUGELY high fat, not good for your birds in quantity or constantly. The "treat" rule applies.

Fatty liver disease in chickens is a silent killer, and the suet recipes above are a great way to inflict that on your birds. The NRCS/USDA recommend for fat content in a chicken's diet is 3.5% +/-. About 1% higher for waterfowl. Around 5.5% for "finishing" a CornishX for table - obviously not a diet concerned with the bird's long term health.

You have been warned.

What does the NRCS have to do with chicken nutrients? That is the part of USDA that deals with Natural Resources Conservation.

They put their name on it? /edit Sorry, that's not the paper with the fat content on it from them, but you get the point, and can follow the links in that document to the one I had in mind.

I no longer ask. TX has a Railroad Commisioner - who has almost nothing to do with Railroads. Quote "The Railroad Commission of Texas (Commission) is the state agency with primary regulatory jurisdiction over the oil and natural gas industry, pipeline transporters, natural gas and hazardous liquid pipeline industry, natural gas utilities, the LP-gas industry, and coal and uranium surface mining operations."

There's an explanation, I'm sure -but at this point, I'm just reporting...

I don’t see why not, though you might have to adjust them a bit.. mainly you need a way to form them, so you need a fat that will set, such as coconut oil or lard or tallow. Some folks make a more cookie one with peanut butter and flour.
Or gelatin, maybe. I haven't made any or looked into it. I simply saw a recipe in a magazine article.

There are marine ecology problems with using fish meal. All of those menhaden and anchovies were supposed to support stocks of predatory fish up the food chain. ...
In my region (upper midwest), there is an abundance of places to go fishing and quite a lot of backyard fishing ponds.

The scraps from fishing we do anyway might be enough for small flocks. Although it would probably complicate figuring out the nutritional profile - between different species of fish and different parts of the fish.

Gelatin. Interesting idea. Someone should try it.
The article had pictures. The author said they made them for their chickens and liked how it worked. They used various kinds of chicken treat items in the mix. So it has been actually done rather than just being theoretical. I wish I remembered what magazine I saw it in to give credit.

Again, I don't intend to make any or look up whether it is a good idea nutritionally.

Gelatin is mostly protein* (assuming unflavored). So a much better idea (see Edit) than peanut butter, which is a (somewhat) better idea than coconut oil or lard.

/edit - gelatin is highest in AAs that either your birds can make for themselves, or that aren't real critical for fowl. It has some Lysine, but NO Tryptophan, and is low in Methionine and Threonine. Therefore, when I said "a much better" idea, I WAS MISTAKEN. A "somewhat better idea" seems more appropriate.

I was thinking about Gelatin being a better choice too today… 😂… I was working and thinking gosh all that fat, there has got to be a healthier way and started to think about gummy’s and fruit rolls and making something like Jiggles out of gelatin. I hadn’t e en read any fat studies on poultry, I just know too much cause all sorts of problems… might look up some Scrapple recipes and see if I can work up a chicken friendly one too.

I wonder if you couldn't make them a blood sausage style treat?
