where we are moving, there is a fenced in backyard of sorts, and then the rest is barbed wire fencing. i am wondering about whether i should let them free range, or build another fence around their new coop. it is in a rural area, and since i have only lived in residential areas up until this point, i have no idea of what kind of threats they will face. i do have a great pyrenees but i am still thinking maybe they need to be fenced in.

I'd fence 'em. There are always other peoples dogs & cats to worry about, plus the local wildlife........

Do you have neighbors? On our acreage we have our horses fenced in, and a coop/run for the chickens. They free range though from sun up to sun down with no fencing to keep them in. We do not have neighbors though around us, just farm fields (alternate beans/corn currently corn). I know we've got some predators in the area but so far, knock on wood, no issues with them during the day. We do have some farm cats that visit our acreage but haven't had any issues with them seeing the chickens as food, they are just looking for mice! Soo depending on your situation, you may or may not need a fence!
