Hi, I have a chicken that I am doctoring before I give her to the person who took the rest of my flock recently. This chicken went through molting while the other chickens were still here. All of her feathers grew back except for the ones on her neck and breast. The other chickens started pecking at her so I decided to see if I could heal her up before letting her go with the rest of the flock.
I also noticed that she developed these growths between her toes and her feet look swollen and red.
I bought Hen Healer for her neck and breast and it has helped enough that her pin feathers are growing in ok, but slowly. I read that I should soak her feet in iodine water daily and I did that but it hasn’t helped her feet. She walks ok but her feet look like they would be sore😢 I don’t know what to do. I can’t let her go until I have her healed up. 😩 none of the other chickens had this so I have no idea what to do. Please advise!!
Also: she lays eggs every day but the shells are so soft that they break as she lays them 🥺

  • Her neck and breast are actually better in this picture than they were before

I think that’s a mild case of bumble foot. Treatment source and info; https://grubblyfarms.com/blogs/the-flyer/what-is-bumblefoot-in-chickens-treatement

If she walks OK, maybe she is OK? I can't tell from the pictures if there is anything wrong with her feet. But I'm no expert.

If you have some calcium to give her that might help. I have a couple of small feeders that I keep filled with grit and calcium for my chickens to eat at will. If you don't have calcium in a bag, you might be able to crush up some eggshells and offer them up to her. Soft shells are usually an indication of lack of calcium. Good feed should have calcium in it, but I always have extra calcium in a feeder as a supplement.

Chickens seem to know when they need extra calcium or grit. My job is just to make sure it is available for them.

I have one hen that never really got her feathers back after a molt. She used to be the prettiest girl in the flock, but not anymore. Feel bad for her. Frankly, I did not know if she had enough feathers on her to make it through our cold Minnesota winter, but, it looks like she is going to make it. Chickens are pretty resilient.

Agree with @Purelychicks. Is she limping or favoring those feet? Bumblefoot can be deep in the foot as well. Soak her feet in epsom salt warm water, then do surgery. Have supplies on hand as article lays out. You can also give her Calcium citrate tablets (500-600 mg) 1x a day and make sure she is getting enough in her feed, or oyster shell.

Thank you very much for your help! 😊

Thank you very much for your advice. I will get her some extra calcium. She is the only chicken in the whole flock that had these issues. Fortunately her feathers are growing in (but taking their sweet old time🙄). I have been putting Hen Healer on her skin and over the pin feathers and it seems to have cut down on redness and irritation so that she doesn’t peck so much.
I sure hope your little girl gets her feathers back soon🥺

thank you very much for your advice. Hopefully I can find someone to help me take care of it. I have cerebral palsy on my right side and can’t perform the procedure myself.

I definitely will! I am going to Tractor Supply first thing in the morning and get the Vetericyn spray and the vet wrap
Please update how she is doing. Hope she will be well, soon.
for her foot. I have everything else I will need. I have a smaller section in the coop that I can keep her in for a few days for it to heal up. My husband said he will hold her for me as long as he doesn’t have to watch me do what I have to do to her feet! 😂 He can hunt and field dress a deer but can’t handle cysts, boils or open wounds🤷🏻‍♀️ Go figure!!

It actually look like impacted toe pockets where she has the swelling in between her toes which would explain the issues walking. If you look at the bottom of her feet does it look like she has a hard almost stone like mass in between her toes?

Both of her feet have the same issue. They both feel soft underneath and in between the toes.
