I found a chicken dead this morning. She had been sleeping separately from the flock for a few days. My coop is secure so no predators. I feed twice a day and keep plenty of fresh water as well. I plan to clean the coop and disinfect all surfaces and monitor the rest of the flock. The rooster had direct contact with her while she was lying on the coop floor.

Concerned about illness and safety of the eggs. Any advice would be appreciated.

Condolences on the loss of your bird. Do you know why she was sleeping on the floor the past few days? Were the other chickens bullying her? Or had she been showing any sign of illness?

Well after reading a little more I think maybe it was egg binding based on the symptoms. I just thought she found a snuggly spot for bed time. She was the prettiest of my Javas and looked quite healthy otherwise. Now I know that's not normal behavior. Thanks for the response.
