After fighting mounds of chicken poop all over our already small yard, we decided to give them a dedicated space away from our green grass. It's been 10 days and they've pretty much murdered the lawn on their side so we've decided to just let them have it. They have a 6x6 run and about 200 sq ft of outdoor space during the day.

What can I plant IN THE DESERT that they will enjoy but not destroy and last year-round?

There is plenty of water and shade year-round but the temperatures in summer are 110+F and right now it's 40+F

Welcome to BYC. If you put your general location into your profile we'll be better able to give you targeted advice when climate matters.

Chickens generally destroy all vegetation except for well-established trees/bushes. If you have enough ground for the number of chickens you can use rotating pens to keep them on fresh greenery, but that's about the only way to do it. :)
