Hey awesome folks of BYC!

I have a girl who has been lathargic and doing the "gasping" breathing all day. She ran a bit when I went to catch her, but not normal. When I got her, she was rasping to breath and her pupils kept dialating big - little, etc.
I felt her crop and it is full but not huge. Her mouth and throat looks normal, maybe pale.

Any ideas?? Can I give her some kind of oil to help pass anything in her crop??

HELP!!

Thank you!
I just feel bad, she has been in the coop most all day. She came out for a few seconds, and thats it. When I made oatmeal this morning, she didn't come out for any, but ate a TAD from me in the coop.
I haven't seen her drink - was out most morning scraping poo and working on stuff - and she is now in a quarintine cage w/ food &water inside the coop..she is pretty lax.
I was thinking she would be less stressed if allowed to just hang out in the corner - out of cage - and waite and see.

Ichecked her out pretty good when I had her in arms...and she seemed fine, feel wise. No leasions or ozzing anywhere.

My flock has Fowl pox, but she only has a tiny spot on her comb...she is also either one of my 4 that lay or is close to doing the deed.

If any helps determine anything, please let me know!!

WOW!!

those 2 sites are amazing! Thank you so much:frow

dosn't look like any of the diseases.

just watching her and got hte vitamines rolling

UPDATE
this morning he breathing is more labored.
She didn't even blink when I went to get her out of the quarintine cage.
She is is with me and I am eye dropping her water and oatmeal.
She is taking it, but gagging on both ofter.
Her feet are clutched close on my lap, but workable.
I took her submissive nature and did a real good feel up...nothing.
Nothing in her crop, her stomach sounded like it was empty, there was a minute amount of normal poo in the cage and she just had a BM on my lap, but it is white and water...
She is kinda holding her tail feathers to the side also...

thats all I got, just a dying chicken...

I would appreciate any ideas...the rest of the flock are all fine,

isolated??

THANKS kIM

Her symptoms sounds associated with the wet form of fowl pox. I'm sorry, but I don't think there is much you can do, except a future vaccination program.

http://www.msstate.edu/dept/poultry/disviral.htm

"Wet pox is associated with the oral cavity and the upper respiratory tract, particularly the larynx and trachea. The lesions are diphtheritic in character and involve the mucous membranes to such a degree that when removed, an ulcerated or eroded area is left."

yeah, what I was thinking...was hoping not, no lumps in the mouth...

She seems to be responding with a bit of food and water...so here goes trying to save the first one!!!

I will update as it goes.

Thank you!!

I'm sorry she is seemingly deteriorating. I don't know what it is, since you couldn't find any more symptoms. Here's hoping she'll pull out of this!!!

Hello...sorry, I forgot to update

She deteriorated towards the end of the day and we culled her. Really stunk, she was my first.

Since then I have had one younger Barred Rock roo in the quarantine cage with what looked like first symptoms as "Wheezy" had...I brought hm in and gave him some electrolytes w/ vitamins and some comfort food.
He seemed much more vibrant and feeling better this morning. Also without any mucus in the nostrils, but he had an eye watering terribly...
he lost out on the quarantine cage to a sicker X Rock, she isn't having the gasping thing, just very lethargic and oozy eye...
She is eating and drinking and recuperating in the house.

I think it just has to do with the fowl pox, but never sure...I hate to see my babes look so pathetic!

I have the whole coop on the electrolyte water since they all have some degree of the pox.

I will defiantly check out that worm...never heard of it before. Thank you TONS for the feedback...

Promise to update if/when figured out.

I am keeping a much closer eye on everybody. We installed light in the coop and I go out early in the morning and have some coffee just looking at everybody...hoping to catch anything before it gets to the cull point...

Have a good night everybody
