Questions about chicken genetics:

If one parent is a PB Polish what are the chances a chick will have the crest? Partial crest?

If one parent is frizzled what are the chances a chick will be frizzled?

In terms of coloured eggs (i.e. blue or green) what do the parents need to carry a gene for? I have had chicks hatch from green eggs that went on to lay brown eggs. What would the rooster need to carry for that chick to lay green eggs?

All chicks from Polish crossed with non-crested will have small crests.

In your case, half of the chicks will be frizzled. These will look very cute with the little crest curling forward.

Both rooster and hen can pass on the colored egg gene. The hen that laid the colored eggs just was not pure for the gene.. if she was bred with a brown or white egg roo, then only half of her daughters will lay colored eggs. Half of her sons will get the colored egg gene but you can't tell by looking which ones do.

For example... pure Araucana rooster bred with a barred rocks or leghorns will produce all daughters laying colored eggs. All of the sons will have the gene too. You know this because of the Araucana rooster being pure for the gene.

Same thing with leghorn or rock bred with pure araucana hen, all daughters lay colored and sons will have the gene.

BUT.. if you breed the daughters from either pairing with another rock, only half will lay colored, and half will lay shades of tan.

If the colored eggers in your case have pea combs and those that lay tan or white eggs all have single combs.. that will make things so much easier because this is a line where the colored egg gene is closely linked with the pea comb gene and all you have to do is keep the pea combed pullets.

However you can't use the trick if the line is already single combed, like the Legbars, Isbars.. in thier case you will just have to wait and see what color the mixed daughters lay.

Kev, thanks for the info.

Now another question: The next two pullets are half sisters. Their father is a PB Barnevelder and the mother of the orange one (top) is a PB Delaware and the mother of the dark one (middle pic, in front) is a Barnevelder-Ameraucana x (lays green eggs). Any predictions on what colour eggs these two will lay?

And the next two (middle pic at the back & bottom photo) are clearly Ameraucanas or Ameraucana x. Do all Ameraucanas, whether PB or not, if they have the muffs/beard lay coloured eggs? Thanks again
