I got her from someone who had raised a bunch of chicks of unknown origin. The owner said he thought she was a leghorn cross, so that's what I've been calling her from the last 3 year. But, now I know that she is actually an Iowa Blue, how exciting!
And, just for the record, she is definitely the alpha hen - she just has to look at one of the others to send them running.
OK, we had decide she was a she - y'all agreed with me. I loved you for it. Everything has been going swimmingly until today when a friend came to pick up the 6th Roo I have had to re-home. She pointed at Marge and said "are you sure that is a pullet? Those look like sickle feathers.' And SHO NUFF! They look like the beginnings of sickle feathers. Or is it just the breed?
12 Weeks old and no attempt to crow or mount in a coop of 8 hens.
No additional comb or wattle development to speak of:
No spur development and no roo-like behavior.
Here are the offending feathers in question:
Here's a nice big close up saddle shot:
And the best hackle shot I could get - the penciling makes me kinda dizzy:
And the penciling makes it really hard to see the true shape of the feathers. The patterning is really pointed but the white edges are ... eh?
What say y'all? Should I start drinking and waiting for the crow or egg?
