Chicken got butt eaten off

Vetericyn is an antibiotic, and it will promote healing. It is non toxic which is important in case your chicken ingests any of it. You should be able to get some at your local feel supply stores. Where I live Jax carries it, and so do locally owned stores. I was afraid my dog's paw was going to have to be amputated. The antibiotics the vet gave us weren't helping and I was desperate. In a week of using this stuff his paw was at 100% and had no infection. I checked the web site and it's safe for birds. I really recommend it!

Ok, y'all are being VERY helpful.
Emailed the 4H leader to see if she knew where to get Vetericyn or any antibiotics for infections.
Explained the situation, should have a response by morning (if not now, LOL, she's up late and answers FAST! :) )
Thanks, ill give her a bath in morning and saline wash again. Can't get the Vaseline to stay when washed with saline, but oh well. Which would be better - boiled water + Vaseline, or boiled water + saline? And if I needed to dry the wound, should I boil the towel then dry it in the dryer at the hottest setting?
THANKS!!!! :D

You should only wash an open wound with water if the blood is still flowing. While blood is pumping the water and its impurities are simply " washing away " . If the wound is open and not bleeding, by adding water you may also be introducing other organisms. I would irrigate the wound with betadine and seal it with a good antibiotic spray.

If you don't have neopsorin or an antibiotic ointment without painkiller (...caine) just leave it alone after the saline. Saline is better than plain water since it is like body fluids. Chickens can heal up pretty easy without glopping them up with all sorts of things and bandages--keep it simple--clean and dry or neosporin. Don't keep washing her, let it heal.BluKote helps after it has dried--it is alcohol with gentian violet, an antifungal--to mask the red wound so she won't be pecked.

Do you ever notice that when you look up veterycin, they tell you it isn't an antibiotic, but they never really tell you what is in it to do all of the magical curing it supposedly does?

The ingredients is on the label. I can find mine and list it for you if you want. All I know is my dog still has his paw because of that stuff. I don't like it because they claim it will work, I like it because I saw my dog's paw go from an infected sliced up mess, to being totally normal with no scar in a week. That's good enough for me. I love the stuff, and always keep some on hand. To each their own though.
