I had a similar problem yesterday with a ‘permanent’ door jam message. I too discovered that the ‘Calibrate’ function (which you must run after clearing the physical fault) only completes successfully and stores the new open and closed positions if the Chickenguard front panel is in place when the calibrate routine is run.
As the OP said, this is because there is a magnetic switch which detects the front display panel.
My original problem was an incorrectly coiled door cord on the motor spindle, making the door travel open when it should have been closing.
