Hello,

I am currently taking care of an adult chicken overnight. It escaped its cage in an open area where I was walking. Since it was late at night, Animal Services asked me to keep it safe until tomorrow morning.

The chicken has food and water and seems to be behaving normally, but I've noticed it is breathing with its beak slightly open. The room temperature is not hot, so I'm unsure why it's doing this. Could it be due to stress?

Should I do anything, or just let her be until morning?

Thank you!

Do you have any idea where she came from? Chickens don't usually stray too far from home unless she got chased by a predator.

Someone is probably looking for her.
Yes! Its an area which is owned by my city. They have many differend animals, including chickens. Right when I walked by, I noticed the chicken had found a way out of the brooder. As the area isnt owned by a specific indiviual, and it was late in the evening, I called Animal services and was told to keep it till tomorrow morning, and then return it and see if someone is at work and can put it back in its brooder.

Looks like panting. What is the temperature there? Where are you located?
They do that to lower the body temperature.
Depending on the breed, chickens normally start panting about 85 or 90F.
