Hi, y'all. If someone had told me a year ago that I was going to be raising chickens (even as a backyard hobby), I'd have thought they were crazy. But I've become increasingly concerned about how commercially grown chickens are raised and I want to have eggs that I can eat with a good conscience. When I told my DH that I wanted to have "a few" chickens, he didn't say anything, but I could read his mind like a book: "Maybe she'll change her mind." So I have been doing research into care of chickens, breeds, coop design, etc., and now I am ready to get started on the coop and run. I think that a shed-type coop will do well, with a run in a shady part of my side yard. My step-dad and I are going to start building this week, if all goes according to plan. I hope to have chicks (Black Australorps) from Mt. Healthy by the end of the month. I hope, in addition to having a supply of eggs at some point and the enjoyment of tending to sweet birds, that my 5 year old autistic son will enjoy the chickens as well.
I look forward to learning from all of you. amanda
