This has been scaring me for at least a couple weeks now. I'm not sure what it is or how to treat it and I'm worried to death about this bird.
About two weeks or more ago I had to grab one of the chickens and put her in a cage on the front porch. She had a big black scab on top of the middle toe of one of her feet.
The scab was spread all the way to her toe nail, and there was dark stuff in the nail and it looked chipped like bacteria had been eating it or something. The toe is also slightly swollen - although not nearly as bad as some of the pictures on here (one looked like the whole toe had inflated to become an itallian sausage).
Now that I think of it, I haven't heard any BOKBOK coming from outside since I've put her in the cage. I bet she was the noise-maker.
I know that she eats and drinks normally, but she lifts her foot up like it hurts.
I have the cage bedded with fresh straw and I feed her crumble and give her water with duramycin-10 and spray her foot with theracyn poultry wound + skin care. I'm lazy and don't clean the cage daily, though.
Recently, the scab had fallen off while I was cleaning the cage, and the toe was bleeding, with the toe nail now missing. So I had someone help me get the foot cleaned with water and then hydrogen peroxide. Then I had sprayed some gauze with theracyn, wrapped it, and taped it.
I have no idea what to do now and I'm worried. I'd like to know more about the problem and how to solve it. I'll post pictures below.
