I just placed my first "direct from hatchery" order from Meyer Hatchery. Previously, I ordered at my local feed store, but honestly was not happy with my choices there. I planned on ordering 10 (because that's what I can have per city ordinance), but shipping was $50. If I ordered 15 chicks, shipping dropped to $15! So, I added 5 "production pack" chicks (all females) to my order and saved $25 on shipping (after the cost of the extra chicks). I spent $74.25 instead of the $100 it was going to cost for 10!
If you don't have space for 15+ (price goes down the more you order), consider splitting an order with a friend or neighbor also looking to order. You can share the cost of shipping and both get the birds you want. Or, like me, pan to rehome some of them after they get here (or I get caught with 50% too many.
