Chicken haters

My wife could probably be considered a chicken hater. I have a big barred rock hen that really torments her. She was on the porch sunbathing last year and the hen climbed up on the chair and started pecking at her hair! then maybe a month later wife was outside in shorts and sandals and the same hen pecked her foot then when wife ran actually chased her around the yard "flogging" at her. I can say you haven't lived until you've seen a grown woman being chased by a 5 lb. chicken! So anyway she hates the chickens.

My step mom does not like eggs or chickens, she does not like chickens because she had a neighbor at her old place that let them free range and they would eat up her garden

. I believe some folks have been around chickens that were not well tended to and were smelly. Most people like my chickens want to see them and do want eggs from me, I'm very adiment about keeping there surrounding clean as well as water feed etc, and they don't smell,my only problem is I don't have enough eggs for everyone

My whole family on all sides raised chickens. Anywhere from 1940's into the 1970's. It was a lot diffrent back then. They each have a diffrent take on it. Some of my Aunts have fond memories of helping to slaughter the chickens due to huge family get togethers with a lot of great BBQ chicken. Then there are the others that it was not their favorite farm animal because of smell. No deep little method back then. Cement floors and a lot of poop to clean. A couple year ago a cousin got back into chickens. She used the deep litter hand raised the chicks and everything. We went to visit and that is when my chicken fasination started. The were so sweet and gentle, even my kids could handle them. Far cry from the terrible RIR rooster stories my Mom used to tell.

I think a lot of folks, here in the South especially, equate backyard chicken keeping with being white trash. Considering the number of well dressed, articulate families I've seen picking out chicks at the feed stores, I have to go with ignorance being the number one cause of chickenphobia.

I have a freind who said she HATES chickens because she had to take care of them when she was younger. she said they STINK!!! and she doesnt want her kids touching the dirty things. well a few weeks ago I got some turkey poults and I asked her if the kids could pet them. she said yes... I let them pet they I asked her why she decided to let the kids pet them. she said because my chickens quail and brooders are ALWAYS clean..... she said they dont smell like the horid smell she remembered... I said well....I am planning on eating them or thier eggs so they gotta be clean!

I think its is becuase things have changed so much over the years... cleanliness is a good thing. and also ignorance is a big factor too... I think every one should have a few chickens in thier back yard!

I would second that though (I grew up in rural TN).

What was trash in TN is good old "green, sustainable" living here in Oregon.

I drew the line at husband using an old shopping cart to feed the goats in the front yard through...

Now excuse me while I roof a chicken tractor with old feed bags...
