Hi. I have a game hen that is having difficulty standing. It appears to be the right leg. I don’t see any swelling I was able to extend the leg and move it without causing her pain. When she does stand it looks like she supports her weight on her knee? I am trying to add pictures but this site keeps ask for a url or http isn’t there a way to post from my photographs?

Hi all. I have a game hen that is having difficulty standing. It is her right leg. I don’t see any injury, swelling, or deformity. She is about 3 years old. No new chickens added in the last year. Poop looks normal. I felt her leg and extended and retracted it without causing her pain. I have no idea what could have caused this. Pics included.

Keep trying to post the picture. There is an icon of a mountain and moon to click on. Is there any green bruising or discoloration along the leg? Are the toes curled under? What is the age? Any vaccination for Mareks? I would give 1/2 tablet of human vitamin B or super B complex daily crushed into a little water for food. Limit activity if possible, and a dog crate with food and water left with the flock is a good way. Hopefully, if it is an injury or vitamin B 2 deficiency, it will get better.

How about the foot? Look at the top and bottom of the foot. Compare the toes for uniform size. Do you see any swelling in a joint or one toe?

Sometimes, it isn't an injury. Starvation from being bullied, hypothermia, stress or shock from a predator attack can mimic lameness.

Two things you can try if you don't find any foot injuries. One is to give warm sugar water with some electrolytes. This can elevate glucose and the hen could respond to it by gaining strength in that leg. You would see improvement in hours.

The other is to give vitamin B complex to heal any damaged nerve endings, strengthening the leg. You would see improvement in two or three weeks.

Get regular people vitamins and give the pill directly in the beak once a day.

You have 3 different threads about this same chicken. It would be good to stay with one, and continue to post on it. I hope it is an injury or vitamin deficiency (riboflavin b2) but Mareks disease could also be a possibility. Make sure that she can get to food and water, and try giving b complex daily.
