Hello everyone,
I am a beginning chicken (and back to basics) enthusiast. I am looking for any advice and help on choosing a good breed of chickens. I live in a northern climate, so I am looking for some cold hardy chickens. Also, I am looking into generally dual-purpose birds, leaning on the egg production side, but I am very lax about this. Some options that I have been looking into are: Sussex, Delaware, Austrolorp, and (maybe) Plymouth Rock. I am also very open to any tips and advice that anyone could give.

All four of the breeds you are thinking about are good choices, Wyandottes are another you might want to add to the list, I have found mine to be very good cold weather layers, and you can't go wrong with a couple of Easter Eggers, those colored eggs are always fun.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join to our flock. Those are all very cold hardy breeds that lay well. Australorps are especially prolific layers. They are all also docile breeds. My children made lap pets of our Australorps and Sussex. If high egg production is a priority, a hybrid you might want to consider is the Black Sex Links (Black Star), which is a cold hardy and friendly, egg laying machine. I've raised Black Sex Links for years (along with dozens of other breeds, including all those on your list), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. I've been especially impressed with how persistent they have continued to lay in really cold weather. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. I would suggest buff orpingtons, black australorps, barred rocks, wyandottes and sussex. They are all very cold hardy, great layers, good for meat and are generally friendly and docile.

Kelsie2290's given you some good links to take a look at. The breeds that you've chosen should work out well. I would strongly recommend the Wyandotte, too. Mine have been very good layers, extremely cold hardy, quite docile and gentle birds.
