HELLO!!!!

This is a thread where we can share tips on how to start your very own flock and help those people who do not know much about chickens to find the joy in owning their own. But we all know how you need lots of hard work and encouragement from others to get the job done. So i want to make this a thread where we can all have fun helping each other and sharing tips and advice based on our own experiences. We won't all be right, and we will fail to succeed. But we can at the least try to help each other.

Feel free to ask any questions. NO QUESTION IS A STUPID QUESTION !

Share your experiences with us and we will share our experiences with you.

1. No crass talk or offensive speaking.
2. Try not to share methods and ideas that you are 90% sure they won't work.
3. Have fun! share jokes.

I will start with the first question:

Has anybody ever used the method to sex chickens where you hold them by the feet and if they try to pull up they are a rooster and if they do not they are a hen????? If so, then is it accurate?????

I haven't used it. I've seen pullets do it and cockerels not do it. It may be a tendency but no insurance. It's almost in the category of being able to tell the sex of a resulting chick by the shape of the eggs. NOT!!

Though it may be the other way around. I'll try not to recommend it unless I know for sure out of experience.

I've hatched chicks with a broody for a long time and started hatching with incubators about 5 or 6 years ago.
There are 84 eggs in my homemade cabinet right now. About 60 are due to hatch in exactly 9 days.

I've been teaching all sorts of chicken classes for several years, from community gardening events to extensive continuing ed classes at area community colleges.
