Dear backyard chicken members,

I have following situation:

1. Buff Orpington, 8 years old, laying eggs very seldom, 4 birds in a very big, covered mostly shaded run. Pine shavings in chicken coop, run woodchips/ strawbales around chicken coop which is on poles

2. She was "off" the last 2 days, mostly tail down, resting, but it was very hot here in PA.
3. This morning her crop was full. I can feel seeds. She is an old lady, gets a bit distressed (breathing) when picked up. So we don't pick her up only when necessary.
4. Other birds are fine, several water, food stations, water, once a week ACV, 2 x week probias, 1 x durastat oregano supplement
5. She is now in a cage, puppy pads, towel for sitting, clear water, no food.
6. She has never been sick, except for mild case of bumble foot in younger age
7. I did egg bound check just in case. I could not feel anything. Don't know if I went far enough in the vent. I stopped because she was agitated when I did that.
8. She cobbled up 2 teaspoons coconut oil and I did crop massage. She kind of had a seizure, her neck "turned" weird and was breathing so hard. So I stopped immediately and just held her. I thought she would pass. It could be that the impacted crop touches her airway? I am afraid if I work on her I will stress her again. Comb and waddles are nice red. So no Ogygen issue? I guess it is all an ethical question. Shall I just let nature takes it course and make her as comfy? Culling is not an option. I just can't. No vet here that takes chickens. She is the last of my 4 buffies and my favorite. Sorry for the long post. Thank you in advance.

Sorry that your favourite hen is not feeling well.

Did you carefully feel her abdomen between her legs? Does it feel hard or rather like a filled water ballon?
She might suffer from water belly which can lead to crop issues and constricting the passage further down her digestive tract.

While water belly is just a symptom caused by other severe health issues such as oviduct infection, EYP, heart failure or cancer, draining some of the accumulated fluid can help to reduce the pressure on her organs.

Thank you for the welcome♥️
I did not even think about that.

Thank you for your fast response. I did not even think about that.🤦‍♀️ I never have encountered waterbelly. I felt the round part and it might be tiny bit soft to the Touch. It is not big though. Felt the other birds and they might be harter in comparison. Really hard to tell. So I probably should drain? And thank you for the welcome♥️

If it's impacted crop I recommend continuing to withhold solid food, and to give papaya enzyme mixed with natural yogurt/kefir. My older hen, Sharon, had a grass impaction this week and was gurgling when she breathed and I legit thought she was going to die. I withheld solid food for two days and fed her the papaya enzyme with kefir and it went away and she's running around good as new.

Not yet. It could be EYP = egg yolk peritonitis, which cannot be drained as the egg yolks accumulate in the abdomen cavity and coagulate because of the high body temperature.

Could you post pictures of her bottom end?

It does not look red or very swollen nor the skin streched too tight.

What concerns me is the very dark colour of her poo. Could this be blood?
Sometimes a raptured tumor or similar can lead to internal bleeding.
