Chicken in a tree.

One of my wyandottes got broody at point of lay (which is early and was unexpected). She was in and out of the yard but I couldn't catch her and she would disappear again. For days. I found her outside the fence (after several days) on a lovely clutch of a dozen eggs. I don't even have a rooster!

I had looked and given up hope of finding her. Her nest was on the ground under some ground cover, and she was pretty hard to spot. I had no idea that she was broody, and the other chickens were staying where they belonged, just not this one.

Could your chicken be getting broody perhaps?

I brought her inside, put her in a dog crate with food and water, and slapped an icepack under her little behind. After about a day or two of this, she was good to go. But your flighty chicken story made me think of this incident.

Oh and her wing got clipped with my sharpest pair of scissors.
