Chicken "in your face" pictures!!

Quote:
Out of the 5 hens I have laying, my Wyandotte seems to prefer the basket over the nest boxes and lays there almost exclusively, even when it's 15 degrees outside, my Leghorn and two of my EE's will use both locations, and my other EE doesn't care for the basket at all, choosing to lay in the nest boxes exclusively.

I initially put it out there to give the one EE who is lowest in the pecking order, and thus, was being physically thrown out of the coop by my Leghorn (top of the pecking order) any time she went in the coop to lay... But now that the others have found it, she doesn't have any trouble laying wherever she wants. It is possible that I actually did need 3 nesting boxes for 7 hens, but I went with the recommended 1 box for every 4-5 hens and just built two... Interestingly, I have noticed a remarkable reduction in egg songs since the basket. So, my flock is very very quiet now. I got one egg song two weeks ago... all my other hens were like "What the heck is that, Loudy McLouderson!!?"

I think I read somewhere that the egg song is meant as a kind of reminder to the flock that this new loud bird who is coming back is a dear old friend, and not a new chicken that must be eaten to death, when she comes back from her hidden nest spot... It is possible that since the nest basket is so public, they've done away with the need for an egg song. I dunno.

LOL

Zoe is the leghorn, Inara is the Wyandotte. It was hilarious, and... I really felt so sorry for Inara... poor girl was up there, minding her own business... her bestest gir'frien', Nandi, was hanging out on the little corner roosting bar keepin' her company... and... so... I thought, ooh, that will be a lovely photo... so I grabbed the cam, and opened the door to walk out there and grab a quick pic... As soon as I opened the door, Nandi hopped off the roosting bar... and the second I stepped foot in the run, suddenly zoe, and Yolanda decided they were needing to lay... not in any of the two net boxes provided inside the coop, oh no... out there in the auxiliary nest on the opposite side of their enclosure... at one point all three hens were standing on or in that basket... It was... ridiculous... and eventually Zoe threw Yolanda out, and shoved her way under Inara. Inara stood there very displeased by that... and after a little bit of hooing and hawing and trying to force Zoe out of her nest... she settled on the side and just stood patiently on the edge of the basket while Zoe finished her business and got out of there.

It was a scene... I got some of it on video... I was loling.

Love the Firefly names :)
