After spending 20% of every day this last week on the forums, getting answers to all my questions, I decided to finally jump in and become part of the community.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Last spring, with the arrival of twenty one half grown chicks in a couple of cardboard boxes. More then half ended up being roos, but by fall we had nine hens laying.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
12; nine hens and three roosters.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Unknown---the person who sent them said a type of Russian egg layer (we live not far from Russia). They're all colors, from black to brown to white, so probably best categorized as barnyard mix.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Seeing them spread out all over, during their thing, or having them turn their heads to look at me inquisitively. Or.. gathering eggs.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Writing, spinning, reading, learning...

Writer/mother, working with my husband and children on a small scale organic farm in a third world country.
