Hello I could use some help in figuring out what is going on with my chicken. She is looking off. Her tail is down, when up on her roost she seems uncomfortable and when I go in to check on her she is just standing there has a dull look to her head and tail down . She does this thing with her mouth like she is tasing something. She is still eating and drinking but seems like she is loosing weight . I did have this happen before to another chicken and what happens is she started looking the same way and as weeks went by she seemed to get weaker, moved very slow and kept loosing weight but was always looking for things to eat and drink.she ended up passing away. It was very heart breaking to watch. I would really appreciate and welcome any ideas on what I can do to help her . I live in New York and my chicken is about 5 years old

I had a hen looking pretty weak during molting, but she is back to herself now. Since I haven't dealt with any real illness in my chickens, I'm not good at diagnosing, but I'm sure one of the ER experts will join the conversation soon.

In the meantime, posting photos and, if possible, a video will help folks help you. if you have Nutri Drench, I would direct dose her with that. Electrolytes would help too, just to give her a boost while you are figuring out what is wrong with her.

I sure hope she gets better soon!

At 5 years old there are many possibilities. Is she molting? How do her droppings look?
Is her crop functioning properly? Does it feel empty, full, soft and squishy, hard, etc.? Is she eating and drinking normally? How does her abdomen feel, below the vent and between the legs? Bloated, hard, soft, water balloon like? Do you know when she last laid? Look inside her beak for anything going on, check eyes, beak and nares for any discharge.
