chicken is "crying" when she poops

I have 4 hens, all 5 months old. They have not layed yet. 2 nights ago they had corn on the cob. the next day one looked a little lethargic and she "cries" when she poops. I hosed down her back side with warm water and didn't see any cuts-any advice would be much appreciated!

what do you mean? Does her eyes fill with fluid when she strains to do the job?

she must be coming down with some kind of respiratory disease

what has she been foraging in?
does the birds eat just crumble feed?

what are the others acting like

do you have reason to believe the corn on the cob effected her?

never heard of this but may be starting of respiratory disease

if so I would use Vetrx on her head and eyes
rub in
and under her wings and down her throat put 1/2 tsp daily till she recovers

in the water put 1 tsp of vetrx
and give all of them the wet mash probiotic with Vit E and Vit B complex

WHILE WAITING FOR THE Vetrx DO THIS

now the
natural probiotic recipe is is:
3 tbsp of dry crumbles
4 tbsp of milk, sweet, sour, or buttermilk or a mixture of all or some
1 tbsp of yoguart of non flavored yoguart ( no artificial sweetmer)
mix good
AFTER PUTTING vIT'S IN
PUT 1 TBSP OF APPLE SAUCE FOR THE WET MASH PROBIOTIC

NOW THE IMPORTANT INGRIEDIENT FOR EACH CHICKen FED
and add 1- 400 mg of Vit E by cutting the end off the vit E capsule for each chickEN fed this wet mash
1 Vit B complex crushed and putting it in the wet mash

FOR each chicken your treating
so for each chickEN use 2 tBsp of mixture and 1-1000 mg of Vit E and 1 vit B complex

and feed each chicken
2 tBsp full of the wet mash probiotic and what they will clean up in 20-30 minutes
then clean wet feeders and restock dry crumbles

do this twice a day for a week
then quit the Vit E make just the wet mash probiotic
then once a week for life

All the while after mdicating the birds use
do not use ACV with medication

2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar per gallon of the chicken water so their gut flora wil be regulated
they should have this at least 3-5 days a week
then three days aweek after they are over coccidiosis
the vit's are neccessary to clean up the damaged gut problem
take all the electrolytes out of the water

They apparently aren't all fine if you have a bird that is crying out when she poops. We'd like to fix that with this little girl.

Incidentally, too much corn depletes the calcium in the diet if you use a lot of it. That is true of all grains as they are high in phosphorus. Particularly with pullets coming up on laying age, you don't want to deplete calcium. She's coming up on laying age and yes - it could be part of it. In fact, I'd want specificially to rule that out. Feel her abdomen gently and see if you feel an egg there.

Also I would make sure and give oyster shell free choice now (not egg shells please) to start allowing them to add additional calcium to their systems if they feel they need it. Laying feed (which is what she should be getting now particularly if her comb is now red) is what the majority of her diet should be for laying at this point in time. It's very important. Just read the number of posts of soft shell eggs and deaths due to lack of calcium there are on the board. If you feel an egg she is not passing (particularly if it's large and her vent is tight and dry) then yes- that might be the issue. There's a risk that either the egg won't pass in which case you have to help it - the safe way. Ask here for directions on that.

Since she's having this symptom in relation to evacuating her bowels, I, too, would recommend probiotics (yogurt) daily. All of the hens could have it weekly if they're coming into laying. The D vitamin fortification and added calcium helps make the first weeks of laying easier. If she's trying to pass a soft shelled egg or expell a shell-free egg, then these ingredients can help further eggs come out safely and reduce risk of egg-laying-problem-related-peritonitis. You definitely don't want to have to go down THAT road!

Without further information, these would be my best guesses.

Could you possibly feel her gently to see if you feel any indications of egg laying? And please describe her droppings clearly to us? There might be some information there that can help solve the mystery. I do hope so!
