I'm sad to announce that I will be putting our number 2 pullet/hen in chicken jail 😢. We thought we could let her work it out on her own but alas not to be. This will be her 4th time in slammer and hopefully the final. She went broody about a month ago...I KNOW I KNOW.. it shouldn't have gone on that long but I hate isolating her and I do know that it is for own good...but its still hard to do.

Sometimes when all else fails, chicken jail is all you can do! Broodies are hard to break and many times it's for their own good. Give her some extra goodies and love while she is doing her time. Good luck with your girl!

The reason we hesitated is the second and third time she went broody she really disrupted the rest of the flock to the point that we built a second nesting area for the other girls. This time the rest of the girls could care less and go about laying as if she isn't there...BUT she is not eating or drinking and pale as a ghost so it's time to try and break yet again.

They can get depressed during breaking and become standoffish and lethargic, however if she isn't eating or drinking soon, she may be sick. At that point you might post in our Emergency forums. Hopefully she snaps out of her broody state soon!

GOOD NEWS I think....right after I posted and before I got her in "chicken jail" some violent weather came in and we decided to give her one more try to break herself(with some help) from broody. We for a week straight would remove her from the nest at first light, lunchtime, after work and right before roosting time...IT WORKED IT WORKED, she comes out in the morning on her own, forages with the other girls and right now not nearly the bully she was or can be. She looks a little worse for ware but sunshine and BUGGING will bring her back. An unexpected event also ...we have 10 pullets capable of laying....we collected 8 eggs yesterday, I'm sure Miss Broody Hen didn't lay and one Blue Wyandotte that isn't ready yet either.
