Hello :D

So I'm a total chicken newb, and I'm getting my first once I move this spring! I will be moving to quite a bit of land so I'll hopefully be able to build something super nice for my chickens :D

So I've been going through all the coop design photos I can find. I have a few questions about some of the details I've seen.

I've seen a few coops where they've had a "chicken jail" not 100% sure what its for but I'm assuming healing an injured bird or something? Is this something I should look into adding to my coop? If so roughly what size should I make it?

My second questions is who all has built some sort of storage in their coops, for food and supplies? Anyone have photos?

Wish my coop had indoor space for a sick bay - jail. When I got my chicks, had read to have something on hand in case of need for illness, injuries. Got a fold up dog cage and was so glad I had it on hand when one of my flock got ill. I have had to use it 3 times, and recently had to buy extras with 2 in sick bay. IMO if they are ill, best to bring inside or into garage - somewhere quiet, warm and without distractions where you can tend any illness or injury. But am now trying to re-introduce a recovered hen to the flock has been quite a pain. Having a "cage" in the coop and a "jail" in the run would make the process so much easier.

Size depends on your flock, but a 2x4 with plenty of head room works well for all. But my "safe run jail" is 30 x 48 " to allow more room for the separated hen.

That may be easier. I have dogs and tons of those foldable cages laying around.

When building my second coop, I sectioned off part of my coop and I love it! Not really used for sick birds, as I would want them away from flock. It is used for injured birds, young birds and when I want to hatch, my broody hen. If you have room, I would defiantly add one! I made mine with a "take down door". So when not in use I can open it up for whole flock.

I planned a partition(4x6') with a separate run in my coop, one of the best design decisions I made...wish a I had a couple more.
See My Coop page, linked under my avatar to the left for more pics.

Those folding crates will come in handy.
Use it for hospital crate, broody breaker, transporting for trade or harvest......put some smaller mesh(1x2") on the bottoms, can still slide tray in if needed.

I really like your design!! Do you have any access points to the sectioned off area so the whole flock can make use of the space when you're not using it to keep them separated from each other?

I love your windows at the top too!

Yes the separating wall is just a couple 2x2's with chicken wire attached, the 2x2's are held in place with 4 screws, pretty easy to put up and take down.
Then it rolls up for storage.
