Today I was surprised and disgusted when my buff orpington hen Nellie rounded the corner with a dead baby mole dangling in her mouth. She was flinging it around and pecking it, shaking it in her mouth.... all that lovely killing methods.

Thankfully there was no blood, otherwise I might of puked, I already wasn't feeling well and to see a dead mole in my chickens mouth just about did it. Anyways, she hung on to that thing like thats all she's eaten in weeks! I had to chase her around the yard until I grabbed a stick and swatted in out of her beak.

So, my question, have you ever found dead moles or mice and thought it was from a cat? Think again. Carnivorous chickens are the killers! Has this ever happened with your chickens?

My hens where fighting over a poor little frog that made the mistake of hopping into their pen.

The chicken pens are the only place on our farm where you can sit on the ground and not see a single bug. Our newest coop was a very old garden shed that we converted and added on to. The thing was infested with spiders, carpenter bees, ants and a few mice called it home but, not more

, My dogs are tearing up my front yard because they have discovered there are critters ie moles under the dirt.

Haha had to laugh, I had a similar situation a week or so ago, one of mine had a small bird. I asked my hubby to get it from her but of course she wasn't going to let it go. I watched her take a few gulps and it was gone...still makes my stomach churn thinking about it!!!

Yup, my chickens are definetly predators. Our RIR (Rhode Island Red), Queenie, got a little mouse today. She was shaking it aroung and pecking it like crazy. Unfortunetly, there was plenty of blood, so I almost DID puke. It was soooo GROSS! She wouldn't let me have the dead mouse after she had killed it, the little stinker. I had to grab her and yank her back, just to get it away. And, I did grab the dead mouse by the tail. DON'T EVER, EVER GRAB A DEAD MOUSE BY THE TAIL; THE SKIN WILL JUST FALL OFF, LEAVING THE TAIL VERTEBRAES EXPOSED!!!!

Oh my gosh that IS gross! The skin.... came... off? Yuck.

Saw my rooster with a featherless baby morning dove that fell from the nest. Lucky for me he ran around the house and out of sight.

Oh, yeah....mine are lil' killers too...I've found a mole, vole, mouse, and a toad in they're beaks......

mine have also *tried* to catch a chipmunk. Gross.

I wish mine would eat the rats that have come around to eat the 'scratch' I leave out for them. They don't mind them at all, they just eat the scratch they want and leave.
