My huge fbcm had recently spent some time indoors in a cage to recover from a massive coon-inflicted wound. She's been back in the coop for a few days now, but my husband says she's been knocking at the door to come in. (He often gets home from work before I do.) Today, he was home sick, and the evil dragon lady escaped the pen, came down to the house and knocked on the door. It was pouring rain outside, so he figured what the hell, and let her in. She sat on the floor in front of him, watched tv for about a half hour, then went back to the door and knocked on it to go back out! The baffling thing is that the evil dragon lady is not even a people-chicken - she DESPISES being handled and only BARELY tolerates us fishing under her for eggs!

Anybody else have chickens knock on the door for odd or unknown reasons?

My whole flock does but one does it daily. As soon as she's finished laying her egg she comes tapping at the door until I go out to the coop and get her egg. I swear she does it to let me know she's finished. She even waits until I'm holding her egg and I've thanked her before she heads off into the shrubs to forage. She also prefers to spend her late morning naps at my feet (I work from home) but she's not able to now that summer's over and the doors are closed.

This isn't the girl who lets me know when her eggs are ready, this is one who insists on napping wherever my dog is...

I just showed hubby that pic and he said, "that's exactly what she did! I guess I'm her dog?!" Apparently it was teenage mutant ninja turtles on the tv and she just watched intently... then hubby dozed off and woke to her knocking on the door when she was done watching tv - not pecking at spilled food on the mat, no - pecking the door!

I have a whole slew of photos of them exploring the house. I like to leave my doors open in the summer to let in a nice cross breeze but the second they see the doors are open they let themselves in to check out what's going on and settle down for naps if I don't shoo them out first.

I used to have a pair of chooks that would sneak in through any open door, they used to love sitting on the back of the couch!
