My two year old buff Orpington has been laying soft but popped and crunched together eggs for a month. A few hours before it comes out, the yolk and the rest of the liquidy part of the egg comes out and splatters everywhere. Why aren't her eggs round and can this be fixed. I'm afraid that if I give her too much calcium her mushy squished egg would turn into a hard squished egg and scratch her insides on the way out. Today her deformed clunky egg was a little harder and I think it must have scratched her insides because it was a little bloody. what could be the problem?

I can't think of any specific problem that would cause this other than calcium deficiency. I have several 3 y/o Orps, and sometimes see some odd shaped eggs, but never crunched. Older hens do tend to develop vent problems.

Perhaps the next poster will have some better ideas.

she's not that old, but can this be fixed or is she just going to be a crunched up egg layer. I can't think of any reason why they would come out so crunched up and mushy.

I agree, i think that she doesn't have enough minerals in her diet, especially calcium. Also, make sure she is on layer feed/pellets. You also may want to check for parasites, just to be safe
