My wyndotte Penny has been laying only egg white and yolk with no shell for several days. I have been soaking her with a warm epson salt bath. Today I have found no egg dropping’s. I have been feeding her cooked egg with shell and oyster shells mixed into it and put the livestock multivitamin in the water. In this case has anyone given antibiotics? I’m worried about infection but also worried about wearing down her system with antibiotics as she seems to be eating and feeling better, she is also walking less like a penguin. Any suggestions on how you have treated this would be helpful. I’m trying to be hopeful. I’m guessing in the future I should be giving her extra calcium supplements. She is my best layer. She has literally laid almost everyday since November taking a break 2-3 days out of the month.

I think it was partially because of jerks shooting off fireworks in the alley behind the coop. Scaring the chickens at night. Had one go off a few nights ago at 2am

It might be from stress, but laying shell-less eggs, egg matter, just membranes, and other maladies can be from oviduct infection (salpingitis) or other reproductive problems. I am not an expert on them, but there is some good information in Merck and on some other poultry sites. Antibiotics can be given, usually Baytril (enrofloxacin,) since it treats gram negative and gram positive bacteria, especially the dreaded E. coli which is common. Baytril is banned in chickens, although some vets will still prescribe it to a pet. Amoxicillin is sometimes used, although not as broad sprectrum, but not banned. Any antibiotic may be looked upon as adding to antibiotic resistance, and may be frowned upon. But some do choose to use them to prolong life and treat reproductive infections. I would use some human calcium with vitamin D3 for several days in a row, 1/2 tablet daily crushed into some cooked egg or other food.

Thanks for your input, you are always so helpful. My girl seems to be on the mend. I did choose to do the amoxicillin and calcium. Had multi vitamin in the water for a few days, just switched it up to apple cider vinegar today. I have the dosage but can’t seem to find any info on how many days to give it......
