Good morning,
I found what I assume to be chicken lice on my rooster. The picture I attached isn’t of my rooster but that’s what it looks like. It wasn’t an infestation and didn’t look like some of the horrifying pictures I’ve seen online, just a few behind his neck, chest area and near his vent. I have a flock of 6 and checked my other 5 chickens and didn’t see lice on them. To treat the coop I used Martins pen and poultry spray to spray inside of the coop, the roost bars, underneath the nesting pads, and the corners of the coop. I also replaced the nesting pads. I did all of this while the flock was free ranging and made sure I gave enough time to let the coop air out. Afterwards I used the Gardstar garden and poultry dust on each one of them. I used a ketchup bottle to get under their chest, wings, vent areas (not directly on vent) back of their neck, legs and basically everywhere else they allowed me to get to. I know this has to be done several times as new lice eggs can hatch. I did this on Monday. My question is when should I do it again and how often should I be checking on this? I try to check my flock at least once a month for cuts on body, cuts under their feet and check their feathers, combs and wattles too. Also, if there are any suggestions on other products or processes, please let me know. I have two bottles of poultry protector and a bottle of vetericyn poultry care coming in to add to my first aid kit. Thanks in advance!
