I just find it funny that hens want a quiet, dark, secure place to lay their eggs to keep them safe from predators...............BUT.................then they scream to the world that they laid an egg.

I've wondered the same thing, but actually there's a method to their madness.
There was a great article in Backyard Poultry magazine awhile back on chicken vocalizations.
The egg song is designed to tell the predator, Follow me! Leave my eggs alone!

Lest that's what the article said.
ETA: Did you know a rooster has different predator vocalizations depending on type of predator and whether it's an aerial or ground threat?

Very interesting as I never thought about a chickens vocalizations. That sounds reasonable as many animals have different vocalizations for different situations.

After I read the article I started paying more attention to the sounds my rooster makes. Sure enough, he has a certain vocalization for 'Okay girls, be more careful' when he thinks something is a threat but not sure. Another sound for 'This is an immediate threat! Take cover!' The girls respond accordingly.
