We have a chicken who normally is the quiet one of the bunch. Lately I can't get her to quit being so loud whenever I am around. She is not laying yet but she is old enough that she could be. Does that have anything to do with it or is it something else? I have never had a chicken with this behavior. Is this a sign she is getting ready to lay? It's been like this for a few days now !

when a chicken lays a egg they like to tell the other chickens you can look up on yu tube egg laying song if that is the sound then that hen is getting ready to lay look all in the coop if you let them free range then look all a round the yard look in fence lines and all inthe secret places but first make sure that is the sound your hearing its kinda like buck buck buck BUCKACK they will do that over and over good luck with your flock

I know what the egg sound like. I have others that make it. But this is a louder obnoxious sounding noise that she's makes at all times of the day but only when someone comes outside. She is normally very quiet!

2 of my chickens have become quite vocal the weeks before and since starting to lay. They both used to be very quiet chickens but not anymore. They carry on about everything now. Lol

Wow!! Ours use to be scared of everyone and hid when we came outside now she's right near us (especially me) and she won't shut up until we go inside. She still won't let anyone touch her but man she is now our loudest one !

I would say, yes.
My last years group of pullets made a gawdawful racket as they reached point of lay.
The quieted down after they all were laying, tho they can still be raucous once in a while.

I would go one further and say, yes, absolutely it has everything to do with feeling the urge to lay. Out of curiosity, what breed is she?

My Welsummers and my Cream Legbars are extremely vocal in the hours before they go in to lay an egg. Before she retired, my Black Cochin was that way, too. They pace back and forth, complaining loudly and incessantly. They may visit several nests in the meantime, rejecting them all, letting the whole world know they are very agitated and displeased.

I've come to realize this behavior precedes their finally settling in a nest, and I'll tell them, "For heaven sake just go lay the darned egg already!"

You should see an egg very soon.

She's an extremely noisy RIR ! She use to be so quiet and timid and wouldn't come near anyone. Lately every time anyone goes outside she runs right up and baulks in your face til you go inside. I told her today "would you go lay an egg so you will shut up"! She use to be the quietest chicken we had that was scared of everything and now she's in everyone's business making sure we all know she's there !

Sounds like you need to check around the yard for eggs or she is about to start laying. Check all the good hidden spots

She finally did it!! Daisy layed her first egg! They are all laying now! It's sure a small one, but the first ones usually are ! Happy Chicken Mamma!!
