I recently isolated one of my chickens because she was showing some strange respiratory symptoms that did not appear to be getting better, but I'm not totally 100% on what's wrong with her. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas. Here's the info:

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Red ranger pullet, approx. 4 months old, 7.5 pounds.

2) What is the behavior, exactly. When Greenie breathes through her mouth, she sometimes makes this quiet sighing sound upon exhaling. It sounds sort of like a cartoon character snoring. Before being given fenbendazole, she also had diarrhea. She is otherwise behaving normally. No foamy eyes, runny nose, or anything else suggesting respiratory infection.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? At least 2 weeks.

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. I am concerned about several environmental factors that may be at play: a) We were struggling for quite some time with leaky watering systems, which left parts of the run very soggy. That issue has since been resolved. b) My chickens are temporarily being housed 25 miles from my house and I visit them once a week. Their coop is smaller than I would like, and I don't get to scoop it out as often as I would like. c) I'm located in Oregon, and we've been experiencing very poor air quality due to the fires down south. d) It's been really freaking hot out for weeks.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. She's been drinking well water from a bucket; eating Purina Layena Pellets ad lib and free ranging once or twice a week.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Poop was runny and sticking to her butt. Since being isolated and wormed, her poop is now normal.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? I swabbed her throat with a q-tip and found stringy brown things on it, making me think that gapeworm may be involved. I gave her 2 grams of fenbendazole daily for the past three days, isolation and supportive care. Since the worm treatment, her symptoms have improved but not totally disappeared.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? As of right now, there isn't a good avian veterinarian in my area and I could not afford one even if there was. I need to be able to treat the bird on my own.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. n/a

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use Greenie normally lives in a storebought chicken coop with four other chickens, which they sleep in at night. During the day, they are let out to roam in an 8x11 foot run. The bedding in the chicken coop is sawdust from reconstituted pine pellets. The bedding in the run is ordinary straw. When I go out to see them once a week, they are allowed to roam freely on 3 acres.

Ensure soiled bedding is either cleaned or completely changed out and replaced during your weekly visits. Sometimes during hot temperatures, chickens make a honking or snoring sound. I had an EE honk when we had record high temps one summer years ago. Chickens also open their wings away from their body in high temps to keep their body cooler. Poor air quality can definitely be a contributing factor too.
I seriously doubt she has gapeworm, they are rare in chickens.
